West Chester Box Score
West Virginia Wesleyan Box Score
KUTZTOWN--The Bloomsburg University softball team saw its 2009 season come to an end on Saturday with a 4-2 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan in the semi-finals of NCAA Division II Atlantic Region championships. The Huskies had reached the semi-finals with a 2-0 win over West Chester earlier in the day.
In the game with West Virginia Wesleyan, the Huskies took an early 1-0 lead in the game when Tara Reed (Williamsport/Williamsport) singled to lead off the top of the second, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Mandy Koch (Dauphin/Central Dauphin). The Bobcats grabbed the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third inning off starter Tara Reed. The senior allowed four hits and a walk in the inning before being relieved by Shavaun Fisher (Coplay/Allentown Central Catholic).
Bloomsburg got one run back in the top of the fourth inning. Emily Young (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) singled to lead off the inning with Casey Massimini (Downingtown/Downingtown West) coming in to pinch-run. Massimini then stole second and scored on a double by Lori Neyhard (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) to make it 3-2. Shen DeBaro (Milton/Milton) then singled putting runners at the corners with one out. However, West Virginia Wesleyan was able to get the next two batters ending the threat.
The Huskies also threatened in the fifth getting two runners on base, but could not score, while the Bobcats extended their lead to 4-2 with a run in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the seventh the Huskies got a lead off single from Danielle Lazorka (Williamsport/Jersey Shore), but a fly out and double play ground out ended the game.
Bloomsburg reached the semi-finals with a 2-0 win over West Chester. Reed tossed a four-hit shutout and drove in a run for the Huskies, while Nikki Shiko (Kulpmont/Southern Columbia) went 4-4 and scored a run. The Huskies scored both runs in the second inning with Reed singling home one run and Young the other.
The only real scoring threat for West Chester was in the sixth when it loaded the bases with two outs, but Reed induced a ground out to end the threat.
Bloomsburg ends its season 35-11.
